4-Bromo-4'-chlorobenzophenone is a molecule that has been used as a dye. The crystallographic structure of this molecule has been determined and it has been found to be excitonic in nature. Excitons are pairs of electrons and holes that can be created when an electron moves from one level of energy to another. Energy transfer occurs when the electron moves from its initial state, which is excited, to the ground state. This process can also happen through an indirect route with the help of an acceptor molecule such as anthracene or deoxycholic acid. 4-Bromo-4'-chlorobenzophenone has shown efficient exciton generation in anthracene crystals at room temperature using a bathochromic shift.
