It has been shown to induce DNA adducts, which may be due to its ability to form hydrophobic condensation products with DNA. (E)-3-(5-Nitrofuran-2-yl)acrylaldehyde also induces cytotoxicity and apoptosis, which is mediated by the ubiquitin-proteasome system. (E)-3-(5-Nitrofuran-2-yl)acrylaldehyde is a fluorophore that can be detected using fluorescence microscopy or phosphorus oxychloride.
