Tetrofosmin is a fluorinated analog of the natural pyrimidine nucleotide hypoxanthine. It is used in the diagnosis and treatment of cardiac disorders such as myocardial infarct, congestive heart failure, or hyperproliferative diseases. Tetrofosmin is administered intravenously and binds to DNA in hypoxic cells, which leads to increased production of oxygen-carrying hemoglobin (Hb) and restoration of mitochondrial membrane potential. This process increases cellular oxygenation and reduces tissue damage due to lack of oxygen. Tetrofosmin also has anti-cancer properties, as it inhibits proliferation in tumor cells by binding to DNA gyrase.
