2-(Formylamino)benzoic acid is a metabolite of the amino acid phenylalanine. It reduces the production of cholesterol and has been shown to have a possible therapeutic effect on autoimmune diseases. 2-(Formylamino)benzoic acid has been shown to inhibit copper-catalyzed oxidation of low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C). The enzyme that catalyzes this reaction is 3-hydroxyanthranilic acid oxidoreductase, which converts anthranilic acid into 3-hydroxyanthranilic acid. 2-(Formylamino)benzoic acid inhibits the activity of this enzyme by binding to it, thereby preventing oxidation of LDL-C. This results in a decrease in LDL levels and an increase in high density lipoprotein (HDL) levels, leading to reduced risk for atherosclerosis and other cardiovascular diseases.
