Benzo[b]thiophen-4-ol is a naturally occurring compound that is found in plants. It has antibacterial activity against bacteria, including Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. Benzo[b]thiophen-4-ol inhibits the growth of these bacteria by acetylation, which prevents the formation of bacterial cell walls. Acetylation also causes an acidic environment that inhibits bacterial growth. The hypoglycemic effect of benzo[b]thiophen-4-ol may be due to its inhibition of furanoflavonoids and flavonoids, which are substances that promote insulin secretion. This compound also shows some antioxidant properties.
