Aerothionin is a class of chemical compounds that are found in the genus Aerotium. It is a type of alkaloid and has been investigated for its ability to inhibit acetylcholinesterase, an enzyme that breaks down acetylcholine in the brain. The asymmetric synthesis of this compound was achieved by using ether linkages and inorganic acids. The dry weight was determined to be 197.8 nm, with 13C and 1H spectra being recorded at 100 MHz.
Aerothionin has been shown to inhibit cancer cell growth through the inhibition of DNA synthesis and protein synthesis, as well as through apoptosis induction.
