Phenylglyoxal monohydrate is a white crystalline powder that has a basic pH, and has been shown to have anti-hypertensive activity. Phenylglyoxal monohydrate inhibits the activity of the enzyme methyl ketones, which catalyzes the formation of methyl ketones from amines. It also inhibits the activity of other enzymes, such as human liver cancer and inflammatory diseases. Phenylglyoxal monohydrate binds to proteins with high affinity, and is effective in binding experiments on human liver cancer cells.
