Methyl 7-chloro-1H-indole-4-carboxylate is an indole derivative that has been shown to have a pharmacophore that is active in the central nervous system. It has been shown to bind to the same receptor sites as morphine, but its affinity for these sites is much lower than morphine. The compound has also been shown to be active against animal models of pain, with a potency similar to morphine and naloxone. Methyl 7-chloro-1H-indole-4-carboxylate may have potential as a lead compound for development of novel analgesics.
