Triphenyl(carbethoxymethyl)phosphonium bromide is a low-molecular weight, electron-deficient compound. It is soluble in both water and organic solvents. This compound has been used as an intermediate for the preparation of polymers and pharmaceuticals, as well as a cross-linking agent for polymers. Triphenyl(carbethoxymethyl)phosphonium bromide is also used in the manufacture of silicone elastomers because it provides properties such as flexibility, hardness, and chemical resistance.
Triphenyl(carbethoxymethyl)phosphonium bromide can be synthesized by reacting triphenylphosphine with chloroform (CHClO). The reaction scheme begins with the formation of a phosphine oxide followed by hydrolysis to produce triphenyl phosphite. The carbethoxy group is then added to the phosphorus atom to form triphenyl
