(S)-2-Amino-3-(1H-indol-3-yl)-propionic acid methyl ester is a compound that binds to the active site of matrix metalloproteinase, an enzyme involved in the destruction of cartilage. It has been shown to inhibit the activity of this enzyme and may be useful as a drug for the treatment of arthritis. The binding constants for (S)-2-amino-3-(1H-indol-3-yl)-propionic acid methyl ester were determined using molecular modeling techniques and found to be strong, with an affinity constant of K=9.5 x 10 M. This compound also can act as an intermediate in the synthesis of pharmaceutical preparations containing methyl ketones, such as methyl propionate and ethyl acetate, which are used in the production of plastics, paints, and varnishes.
