Ethyl isopropyl sulfone is a quaternary ammonium salt that acts as a solvent, organic reaction system and electrolyte. It has high melting point (above 100°C) and low viscosity at room temperature. The compound is a colorless liquid with an odor similar to acetonitrile. In the presence of metal ions, it can be used as an electrode and viscosity increases with temperature. Ethyl isopropyl sulfone has been shown to react with lithium in acetonitrile to form methyl sulfone. It appears to have no effect on the structure of ring compounds, such as methyl sulfone and ethyl isopropyl sulfone.
