4-[2-(4-Hydroxyphenyl)propan-2-yl]benzene-1,2-diol (BPPD) is a chemical compound that belongs to the group of phenolic compounds. BPPD has been shown to react with human liver and human skin cells in vitro. This compound has also been shown to be an active form of benzene, which is a known carcinogen. BPPD binds to receptor α and activates its activity. The activation of receptor α leads to phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K)/Akt pathways that are involved in cell proliferation and apoptosis. This compound has been found in urine samples from humans as well as rat liver microsomes.
