(4-Methyl-2-thienyl)methylamine is an inhibitor of protein kinases, which are enzymes that phosphorylate other proteins. It has been shown to have a high affinity for the dyrk1a protein and selectivity for this kinase over others. (4-Methyl-2-thienyl)methylamine also inhibits dyrk1a with a potency similar to that of ATP. The analogue of (4-methyl-2-thienyl)methylamine is more potent than the parent molecule at inhibiting dyrk1a. Docking studies show that (4-methyl-2-thienyl)methylamine binds in the active site of dyrk1a and prevents it from phosphorylating its substrate, leading to inhibition of cell growth in culture.
