Doxazosin is a non-selective α1-adrenoceptor antagonist that lowers blood pressure by blocking the binding of norepinephrine to its receptor. Doxazosin is used to treat high blood pressure and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). It has also been found to have an inhibitory effect on bladder contractions in animals. The inhibitory potency of doxazosin is increased when it is administered orally, which may be due to its conversion into the mesylate salt form. This drug has a dose-dependent effect on systolic and diastolic blood pressure, with increasing doses producing greater effects on both.
