ADH-1 is a cyclic peptide with a high degree of structural homology to adenosine. ADH-1 has been shown to be effective in vitro against adrenocortical carcinoma cells, which may be due to its inhibition of energy metabolism and cell proliferation. ADH-1 also has minimal toxicity in vivo, as it does not inhibit the growth of normal tissue culture cells. The compound is not active against cancer cells that have lost their ability to synthesize adenosine, such as those found in tumor tissue or those that are resistant to chemotherapy.
