Etamicastat is a drug that inhibits dopamine β-hydroxylase, an enzyme that converts dopamine to norepinephrine. It also blocks the activity of vasoactive intestinal peptide and leads to increased concentrations of dopamine in the blood. Etamicastat is used as a diagnostic agent for congestive heart failure and has been shown to decrease systolic blood pressure in patients with congestive heart failure. Etamicastat’s pharmacodynamic properties are similar to those of propranolol and metoprolol, but it has a much longer half-life than either drug. The plasma concentration-time curve for etamicastat is biphasic, with an initial phase characterized by rapid absorption followed by a terminal phase characterized by slow absorption.
