4-Acetylpyridine is a polar compound that is a white crystalline solid. It is soluble in methanol and reacts with hydrochloric acid to form hydrogen chloride and 4-acetylpyridine hydrochloride. The photochemical properties of 4-acetylpyridine are similar to those of pyridinium chlorochromate, which produces an intense red color upon irradiation. 4-Acetylpyridine has been shown to be effective in the treatment of cervical cancer and congestive heart failure. The structural analysis by x-ray crystal structures shows that this compound has two forms, one stable at higher temperatures and the other metastable at lower temperatures. This compound also has protonated forms, which may be due to the presence of a n-oxide group on the molecule.
