- 4H-thieno[3,4-c][1]benzopyran-4-one, 3-amino-
3-Amino-4H-thieno[3,4-c]chromen-4-one (3A4C) is a novel antibacterial agent that has been shown to be active against a number of human pathogens including methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus and multidrug resistant Escherichia coli. 3A4C inhibits bacterial growth by binding to DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, which are enzymes involved in the maintenance of bacterial DNA, leading to cell death. 3A4C has also been shown to inhibit the growth of C. neoformans and other fungi that are resistant to many standard antimicrobial agents. 3A4C is stable in elemental form and may be used as an aerosol or liquid formulation.
