4-(Aminomethyl)benzyl]dimethylamine dihydrochloride is a monoamine oxidase inhibitor that inhibits the activity of monoamine oxidases in the body. It has been shown to have a protective effect on cells by inhibiting oxidative damage. Additionally, it is believed to inhibit the mitochondrial enzyme glutamate dehydrogenase and thereby prevent the accumulation of toxic levels of excitatory amino acids. The deuterium isotope effect has been used to study the transfer mechanism and catalytic mechanism for this drug.
