2-Amino-5-nitrobenzenesulfonic acid is a chemical compound that has been expressed in E. coli cells. It binds to amines, which are negatively charged, and forms a complex with acidic benzenesulfonic acid. The tautomeric equilibrium between the 2-amino and 5-nitrobenzenesulfonic acids is pH dependent and can be shifted by the addition of ammonium salt or nitrate ions. This ligand has been shown to catalyze reduction reactions involving amines. 2-Amino-5-nitrobenzenesulfonic acid also has photoelectrochemical properties that may be exploited for applications such as solar energy conversion and water splitting.
