(R)-2-Acetamido-2-phenylacetic acid is a metabolite of the amino acid phenylalanine. It has been shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria and is used in many antibiotics like penicillin G, erythromycin, and tetracyclin. (R)-2-Acetamido-2-phenylacetic acid is a structural analogue of phenylacetate and can be synthesized from phenylalanine by the enzyme phenylacetate decarboxylase. This compound is insoluble in water, but soluble in organic solvents such as ethanol or acetone. It also has been isolated from bacterial strains such as Stenotrophomonas maltophilia and Septadex G-100 agarose beads. The enzyme activity profile for this compound has not been fully elucidated yet, but it has been shown to have specificity towards carbon sources such as glucose and lactose
