Acetazolamide sodium is a carbonic anhydrase inhibitor that is used in the treatment of glaucoma. It reduces the production of aqueous humour and increases the outflow of aqueous humour from the eye. Acetazolamide sodium has been shown to be effective in animals, with decreased dry weight and increased corneal epithelium thickness. Acetazolamide sodium belongs to risk group D, which includes drugs that are not recommended for use in pregnant women or children. This drug may also be used as a diagnostic agent for detecting mesenchymal cells in tissue sections, as well as medications used to reduce intraocular pressure.
