Aminoacetonitrile sulfate is a hydroxyl compound with a nitrogen atom. It is used in horticultural therapy as an inhibitor of viruses and bacteria. Aminoacetonitrile sulfate inhibits the influenza virus by binding to the viral hemagglutinin protein, preventing it from attaching to host cells and inhibiting viral replication. This compound has no effect on plants, which may be due to its inability to penetrate plant cell membranes. The hydroxy group may also inhibit bacterial growth by interfering with DNA synthesis or by acting as a false substrate for enzymes that require amino acid precursors.
