5-Aminobenzothiophene is a cytotoxic agent that inhibits the activity of an enzyme called cytochrome P450. This enzyme is involved in the conversion of hydroxyl groups to terminal alkynes, which are important in the synthesis of dyestuffs and other molecules. 5-Aminobenzothiophene has potent antitumor activity against lung cancer cells, and has been shown to inhibit terminal alkynes and methoxy groups that are involved in cellular metabolism. 5-Aminobenzothiophene also inhibits carbonic anhydrase, which is involved in the conversion of carbon dioxide to bicarbonate ions. This inhibition leads to cell death by preventing the production of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) needed for energy transfer within cells.
