Azetidin-3-aminedihydrochloride (AZA) is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic that inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, which maintain the integrity of the bacterial cell. AZA has an anti-inflammatory effect and can be used to treat infections caused by gram-negative bacteria, such as Salmonella and Shigella. AZA is not active against acid-fast bacteria such as Mycobacterium tuberculosis or Mycobacterium avium complex. AZA has a low toxicity profile in animals and humans, with no safety concerns identified at doses up to 2000 mg/kg/day. It is also not teratogenic or mutagenic in animal studies.
