(3S,5R)-3-Amino-5-methyloctanoic acid is an amino acid that has been synthesized by asymmetric synthesis. It is a substrate for aminotransferases and may be involved in the regulation of chloride transport. This compound has shown anxiolytic activity in animal studies and clinical trials. (3S,5R)-3-Amino-5-methyloctanoic acid has also been found to have antiinflammatory effects and to inhibit a number of enzymes such as β-aminoacylase, glutamine synthetase, and phosphofructokinase. The mechanism of action for this drug is not well understood but may involve inhibition of acetylcholine release from nerve endings or activation of α2 adrenergic receptors.
