Ammonium sulfide is a chemical compound that is used as a reagent in histology to stain for acid phosphatase. Ammonium sulfide can be used in the staining of cell nuclei and cytoplasm, specifically by binding with phosphate groups on the surface of cells. A micrometer-sized solution of ammonium sulfide has been shown to increase oxygen transport in leukocytes, which may be due to its ability to release oxygen from hemoglobin. Both snakehead and goldfish have been shown to have increased activity of acid phosphatase in response to ammonium sulfide exposure. This may be due to the potential mechanism of action where ammonium ions are released as an intermediate product that may then bind with phosphate groups on the surface of cells.
