(S)-2-Amino-5,5,5-trifluoropentanoic acid (RACEMIC) is an enantiomer of 2-amino-4,4,4-trifluorobutyric acid. It is a nucleophilic compound that reacts with a variety of electrophiles to form the corresponding esters or amides. RACEMIC can also react with trifluoroacetic anhydride to form the corresponding trifluoromethylated derivatives. The racemic mixture of (S)-2-amino-5,5,5-trifluoropentanoic acid can be prepared by either reacting propargylic alcohol with ethyl bromoacetate followed by hydrolysis and decarboxylation or by reacting acetoxypropargylic acid with methyl iodide and sodium hydroxide in presence of acetic anhydride.
