9-Acetylanthracene is an aromatic hydrocarbon that can be synthesized from the Friedel-Crafts reaction of anthracene with acetyl chloride. This process involves the addition of a hydrogen atom to one of the carbons on the molecule, which creates a carbonyl group. The reaction may proceed in two different ways, depending on whether there is an intermolecular hydrogen bond or not. If there is an intermolecular hydrogen bond present, then the Friedel-Crafts reaction will occur through an alkoxy radical mechanism; if not, then it proceeds through a transfer mechanism. 9-Acetylanthracene can be obtained by hydrolysis of its corresponding chloride or by reacting it with hydrochloric acid. The product can also be purified using chromatography and analyzed using infrared spectroscopy to identify its functional groups and determine the presence of any impurities.
