(S)-2-Acetylthio-3-phenylpropionic acid is an optical isomer of 2-acetylthio-3-phenylpropionic acid. It is a chiral compound that crystallizes as a white solid. The crystal structure of this compound has been determined by X-ray diffraction, and it exhibits the same melting point and boiling point as 2,4,6-trichlorobenzoic acid. Acetylthio compounds are used in the production of xylene, which can be used to produce phenol and acetone. The chemical reaction between sodium nitrite and (S)-2-acetylthio-3-phenylpropionic acid produces nitrous oxide gas and sodium thiopropionate. This reaction can be used to measure the concentration of nitrite ions with a metered pump.
