5-Aminolevulinic acid hydrochloride is a diagnostic agent that can be used to diagnose bladder cancer. It is also used in DNA sequencing experiments and in the study of mitochondrial functions and energy metabolism. 5-Aminolevulinic acid hydrochloride is an intermediate in the heme biosynthetic pathway, which is synthesized from glycine and succinyl-CoA by the enzyme aminolevulinic acid synthase. Structural analysis of this product has revealed that it has a molecular weight of 256.2 g/mol, with a particle size less than 0.25 mm.
