(2S)-2-Amino-3-phenylpropionyl amide is a fluorescent probe that can be used to measure the cytosolic Ca2+ concentration in cells. It is also an antimicrobial that inhibits bacterial growth by binding to protonated amino groups on the surface of microorganisms. The drug binds to the amide group of peptide hormones and prevents them from interacting with their receptors, which prevents the production of these hormones. The drug has been shown to inhibit polymerase chain reactions in vitro. (2S)-2-Amino-3-phenylpropionyl amide has a pK a of 4.5, which is close to the pH optimum for enzymatic activity. The drug reacts with C coli K-12 cells, but not with E coli K-12 cells due to differences in the cytoplasmic membrane composition. (2S)-2-Amino-3-phenylpropionyl
