5-Aminopicolinic acid is an inhibitor of tyrosine phosphatase, which is a group of enzymes that dephosphorylate and activate tyrosine residues. This drug has been shown to have antihypertensive activity in rats with chronic renal failure. 5-Aminopicolinic acid has also been shown to have potent inhibitory activity against α subunit of the angiotensin II receptor in vitro. This drug is able to form covalent bonds with metal ions, such as copper and iron, which may account for its anticancer activity.
5-Aminopicolinic acid has also been shown to have pharmacokinetic properties that are different from other drugs in this class. It is not metabolized by esterases or glucuronidases and is excreted unchanged in urine.
