Aluminum acetate is an inorganic acid that is soluble in water. It is a salt of aluminum and acetic acid, with the chemical formula Al(C2H3O2)3. Aluminum acetate has a solubility of 1.1 g/L at 25 °C. When dissolved in water, it hydrolyzes to form acetic acid and sodium acetate. The solution has a pH of 3-4 and decomposes when heated to 150 °C. Aluminum acetate is used as a catalyst for the synthesis of polyamides and polyesters, as well as for the production of caproic acid from caprylic acid and hydrogen chloride gas (HCl).
Aluminum acetate can be produced by reacting aluminum metal with acetic anhydride or acetic acid:
Al + 3CH3COOC2H5 → Al(C2H3O2)3 + 3CH3COOC2H5
or by reacting aluminum
