DL-a-aminopimelic acid (LAPA) is a pyrimidine derivative that is involved in the transport of amino acids. DL-a-aminopimelic acid has been shown to be transported by the human lymphocytic leukemia cell line THP-1, which has been shown to have a high rate of uptake for LAPA. In addition, this molecule has been shown to be synthesized by the corynebacterium glutamicum bacterium and serves as an active analog of glutamate. The presence of hydroxyl groups on the pyrimidine ring make this molecule susceptible to chemical modification. DL-a-aminopimelic acid has also been found to be present in colorectal adenocarcinoma patients and may be used as a potential therapeutic target for these patients.
