Acetonyltriphenylphosphonium chloride is a reagent that can be used for the synthesis of retinoic acid. It is a pyridinium salt that reacts with anions such as chloride to form a stable cation. The cation can bind to nuclear receptors and stabilize them, which may lead to new treatments for diseases such as cancer. Acetonyltriphenylphosphonium chloride has been shown to interact with azulene in solution and form complexes. This interaction leads to the stabilization of azulene and changes its color from yellow-green to blue-green, which is useful in the synthesis of dyes. Acetonyltriphenylphosphonium chloride also forms an unstable intermediate with coulombic interactions that can be cleaved by hydrochloric acid or thermo-chemical reactions, leading to the formation of dihedral molecules.
