1-Acetyl-1H-benzotriazole (1ABT) is a chemical compound with the molecular formula C6H5COCH2. The addition of an acetyl group to 1ABT produces 1-acetyl-3-benzotriazolium chloride (1ABTCL). These compounds are used as optical brighteners in laundry detergents and as dyes for textiles and plastics. In these applications, the fluorescence of 1ABTCL is excited by ultraviolet light at 365 nm and the emission maximum is at 460 nm. The deuterium isotope effect on the rate constant of 1ABT was observed using NMR spectroscopy. This kinetic constant was found to be inversely proportional to the number of methylene units between the protonated nitrogen atom and the carbonyl carbon atom. The kinetic constant may be useful for diagnosing patients with metabolic disorders such as diabetes mellitus or liver disease.
