3-Acetylisoquinoline is an isoquinoline alkaloid that has been shown to have antibacterial and antifungal activity. It is a competitive inhibitor of the amine binding site of bacterial enoyl-acyl carrier protein reductase, which blocks the synthesis of bacterial fatty acids. 3-Acetylisoquinoline also inhibits the replication of herpes simplex virus in tissue culture and has shown antiviral properties against human cytomegalovirus. This compound has been shown to be effective against Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus faecalis, and Neisseria meningitidis in tissue culture. 3-Acetylisoquinoline can be used as an adjuvant therapy for bacterial infections such as urinary tract infections and respiratory tract infections.
