3-Aminobutyric acid is a β-amino acid that is synthesized by the metabolism of glutamate. It can be found in human serum and has been observed as a diastereomer in lipase-catalyzed reactions. 3-Aminobutyric acid has been shown to have the ability to inhibit lipolysis through its interaction with lipases. This amino acid has also been found to be an important component of the biosynthesis of butanoic acid, which is a fatty acid that plays a role in the synthesis of fat and cholesterol from carbohydrates. Structural isomers are also possible for this molecule, such as 2-, 3-, or 4-amino-2-methylbutyric acids.
