2-Amino-4-pyridinecarbamide is a compound that has been patented for use in clinical trials as a biologic therapy. It is designed to potentiate the effects of cytokines and inhibit the production of inflammatory substances. The compound also has anti-leukemic activity, which may be due to its ability to inhibit the synthesis of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD) and the inhibition of leukocyte proliferation. Inhibition of NAD synthesis leads to an accumulation of isonicotinic acid, which can induce apoptosis in leukemia cells.
