(S)-3-(1-Aminoethylphenol) is a polypeptide that has significant activity in neuropathic pain and diabetic neuropathy. It is an enantiomer of the racemic mixture of (R)-3-(1-Aminoethylphenol). It is synthesized by biocatalysts from 2-chloroethanol in the presence of acrylamide and formaldehyde. The discovery of this compound was made possible by screening for compounds that could inhibit the enzyme transaminase, which plays a role in the metabolism of L-DOPA to dopamine. This compound binds to host cells and blocks the synthesis of polypeptides, which may be involved in the pathogenesis of neuropathic pain.
