- 5-Fluoromethylornithine
- 5-Amino-6-Fluoronorleucine
5-Amino-6-Fluoro-Norleucine (5AFN) is a naturally occurring amino acid that has been shown to inhibit the enzyme aminotransferase in cell culture. This inhibition leads to an increase in ornithine, which may cause acid formation. 5AFN also inhibits the polymerase chain, which can lead to orotic aciduria. This drug is also known to be a competitive inhibitor of glutamate at the NMDA receptor and may enhance the activity of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA).
5AFN has been shown to cause irreversible inhibition of actin filaments, leading to cell death. The mechanism of action by which 5AFN causes this effect is still unknown.
