N-Acetyl-S-(1,1,2,2-Tetrafluoroethyl)-1-Cysteine (NACET) is a synthetic fluorine-containing alkene that is incubated with cisplatin to form a reactive intermediate. NACET does not bind to DNA and does not have any direct cytotoxic effects on cells. However, it has been shown to increase the uptake of cisplatin by cells by over 25% and can prevent the formation of platinum complexes that are inactive against cancer cells. This drug also reacts with mercuric chloride to form an active complex that binds more tightly to DNA than cisplatin alone. NACET may be used as a prodrug for cisplatin in the future.
