5,8-dimethyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydronaphthalen-1-one is a pyridinium compound with an aromatic ring. It has been shown to react with amines in the presence of a hydroxyl group to form pyrylium cations. 5,8-dimethyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydronaphthalen-1-one is also capable of forming protonated and acetonitrile adducts. The activation energy for the reaction of 5,8-dimethyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydronaphthalen-1-one with amines is very high (near 55 kcal/mol), which explains why this reaction does not occur spontaneously. This compound can be synthesized by irradiating naphthalene with deuterium radiation or cryogenic temperatures.
