Non-8-enenitrile (NE) is a new agent that has been shown to be neuroprotective in animal models. NE is an inhibitor of the enzyme acrylonitrile reductase and can be used to prevent the formation of nitrosamines, which are carcinogenic compounds formed from acrylonitrile. NE also has anti-inflammatory properties. It has been found to inhibit enzymes that degrade glucoraphanin, which is a precursor for sulforaphane, a compound with diverse biological activities including anticancer effects. Non-8-enenitrile is structurally similar to imidazole derivatives, such as histamine and tyramine, and may have interactions with drugs that act on these receptors.
