Palmitoyl-sn-glycerol (PSG) is a triacylglycerol that is found in the maternal blood and has been shown to have hypoglycemic effects. PSG also has anti-inflammatory properties, as demonstrated by its ability to inhibit the production of prostaglandin E2 in hk-2 cells, which may be due to its ability to inhibit hydrogen bonding. PSG is a fatty acid with an acyl chain containing 16 carbon atoms, which are hydroxylated at the 3rd and 4th position of the glycerol backbone. PSG is structurally similar to other polyunsaturated fatty acids and can be metabolized for energy production. PSG contains a hydroxyl group at molecular position 2 on the glycerol backbone, which makes it susceptible to oxidation reactions.
