2,8-Dichlorodibenzofuran is a chlorinated aromatic compound that is used as a monomer in the production of polymers. It has been shown to be photodegradable and dechlorinated to 2,6-dichlorobenzene and dichloroacetic acid. Polychlorinated dibenzofurans have been found in human adipose tissue, but have not been detected in the environment. The yields of 2,8-dichlorodibenzofuran are high and constant under pressure conditions up to 1200 psi (827 kPa), with a maximum yield of 90%. The structure of 2,8-dichlorodibenzofuran has been postulated to be formed by two successive steps: firstly, chlorination followed by hydroxylation.
