1-Methoxy-4-[(methylsulfanyl)methyl]benzene is a benzyl compound that is used in organic synthesis. It has been shown that 1-methoxy-4-[(methylsulfanyl)methyl]benzene can be made by deprotonating the methyl sulfide and then adding the phenanthridinium salt to the resulting radical cation. The electron from the acetonitrile molecule reacts with the sulfur in 1-methoxy-4-[(methylsulfanyl)methyl]benzene to produce an S2 ion and a radical cation. This reaction, which is called transfer, also leads to bond cleavage of the phenyl ring. Photoinduced electron transfer can occur when light is shined on this compound, leading to phenoxides.
