Descrizione

Benzimidazole-5-carboxylic acid methyl ester is a cytotoxic drug that belongs to the group of anti-cancer agents. It is hydrophobic and has been shown to be a potent inhibitor of cancer cell lines in vitro. Benzimidazole-5-carboxylic acid methyl ester binds to the cytosolic fraction of cells and causes DNA damage, leading to inhibition of tumor cell growth. It has been shown to inhibit tumor cell line proliferation, as well as cisplatin-induced apoptosis in rat liver microsomes. The mechanism for benzimidazole-5-carboxylic acid methyl ester's cytotoxicity is not yet fully known, but it may be due to oxidative stress or induction of apoptosis by activation of caspases.
