4-Bromo-5-methylisoxazole is an organic compound with the formula CHBrNOS. It is a benzene derivative that contains a methyl group substituted in the 4 position and a methyl group substituted in the 5 position. The compound exists as two enantiomers, with the (S) enantiomer being more active than the (R) enantiomer. 4-Bromo-5-methylisoxazole is soluble in water, ethanol, acetone, and diethyl ether. It reacts with strong acids to form salts such as hydrobromide and hydrochloride.
4-Bromo-5-methylisoxazole can be used as an intermediate for synthesis of pharmaceuticals or other chemicals. It has also been studied as a possible antimalarial drug candidate.
